PLRD Mobile CTS Modules

Teacher Reference Webpage

Electronics, Mechanics & Wildlife

This webpage is designed to act as a resource for teachers delivering PLRD Mobile Modules. In addition to the files of student documents, videos and links, there are marking masters, quizzes and their marking masters, and additional videos. There are three separate areas of modules being deliverd.

Electronics (ELT1010/1030/???

Mechanics (MEC1015/1040/1020/1130/3010/2050/3080)

Wildlife (WLD1010/1020/1050/1080/2020/2040)

A DISCLAIMER, OF SORTS

These modules will be rotated between schools, but it is impossible to determine if the same teacher will be delivering the Mobile CTS Program when it next returns. For that reason, it is advisable to make updates and changes in such a way that teachers who next work with the units will be able to make use of them. Another option is to say, "hey, let 'er buck, each one for themselves". Not a particularly collegial way to go about it, but then again, changes made to suit one school may not be suitable for the next. It is my suggestion, as the developer of these modules, to create a folder which would go on to the next school outlining the changes you may have made and why you made them. I admit, there are going to be spelling errors and there are no doubtedly formatting errors, but these modules have never been presented to students. As I put them together, I was calling on my 20+ years experience of teaching (most) of this stuff to tell me if it was set up in a way to keep kids engaged and whether it would approach the 25 hours expected per module. For me, it works. For you, I'm not so sure. The instructions I had when this project began was to take an existing program, tweak it, format it and possibly add some stuff. It turns out that it couldn't be tweaked because the curriculum had changed. It couldn't be formatted because a lot of it just wasn't there. And to meet the guidline that a grade 6 teacher could present it.... It just so happens we have very, very smart, talented and knowledgable grade 6 teachers at JCCHS!!!

If you are going to be offering the same modules to other students as the weeks/months/years progress, keep exemplars. Not just the good stuff, but of the less than good. It is a great way to show students what they should actually be working towards.

As you work on these modules and you have MAJOR issues, please drop me an email. The only rider is that I won't be working on this during the school day and you may have to wait a bit for a fix. Especially if it is during ice fishing season. Or hunting. Hunting season is bad. But I will get back to you and hopefully can help you out. The big thing is that as a teacher, you will be able to tweak things, change, add, subtract - whatever works for you. Good Luck.

CTS Background Documents

Introduction to Mobile CTS Program

The initiative take by Prairie Land Regional Division is designed to provide Career and Technology programming to students who not otherwise have the opportunity to experience them. The strands of Electronics, Mechanics and Wildlife were chosen for the wide range of skills they present, the variety the would be offer the students, and the ability for teachers to present these courses without special instruction.

Each one of these modules is designe to be offered to students in a self-learning environment. Teachers would provide students with the modules, supervise and monitor their progress, and provide them with a mark based on a variety of assessment tools.

Course Documents

The following is a list of documents which pertain to the different courses. They include instruction manuals, student introductions, workbooks, information sheets and assignments. The actual sheets completed by students will be done on hard copy to allow teachers to better monitor student progress and understanding. Some assignments may be completed online, or using a word processor, and these will be indicated by the instructor.

Every effort will be made to keep these documents up to date, but any changed or altered documents provided by the course instructor will be recognized as the actual document.

OF IMPORTANCE TO TEACHERS!!!

This webpage is basically the student webpage, just in a different color and with all the teacher stuff included. The quizzes, marking keys, master copies, rubrics, etc. are all here. I have also included video clips which are not included in the module bookwork, but could be of interest to the student, or used as the basis for another assignment, or.... whatever. These clips are in a section marked "Supplemental Video".

SAFETY Safety is important. It is my recommendation to each teacher at the start of each semester to go over the provided safety program. It is basically taken right out of the basic learner objectives of the curriculum and is applicable across the board. It is especially good for you in that the students are going to help find any issues that may be present, or anything that could be a problem, safety wise. A lot of it is just talking. Work through the sheets with the kids and get serious about it. There are lots of videos available about safety on the internet and through Discovery streaming, but they can be very, very graphic, and I mean turn my stomach. Gross. There are likely enough stories in your class to give all the reason you will ever need.

OCCUPATIONS There is a sheaf of Occupational Connection Worksheets provided and the blank is available on this disc. Every module makes a point of getting students to build connections between what they are studying and possible career pathways and life long interests. The best way to bring this whole concept to the forefront is to bring in a speaker. Bring in a fireman during the safety talk. Call the nearest fish cop and let them come and enthrall the class. Electricians, mechanics, repairmen - active or retired - they all have a wealth of knowledge that will liven up your class, interest your kids, and make your class meaningful.

FIELD TRIPS AND GUEST SPEAKERS A great way to learn it to see someone doing it. In some of the modules it is suggested that you arrange a trip to see professionals performing a particular task. It will take some work on the part of yourself, school admin and maybe others, but if you are working on something that readily available in your area, take advantage of it. Just remember to clear it with admin first!
